The Korean shipbuilding industry secured a job worth KRW 3.4 trillion by winning orders for a total of 17 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers over three days. The industry believes that it won an order for the LNG project of’Mozambique’ of France, the last big fish this year.

Chosun holding sign of Hyundai Heavy Industries Group Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (009540)Announced on the 23rd that it has signed a contract to build a total of three LNG carriers with shipping companies in Bermuda and Panama. The total contract size is KRW 612.2 billion, and these ships are expected to be built at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries. Korea Offshore & Shipbuilding has won 9 LNG carrier orders over the past three days from the 21st, and signed a contract worth KRW 1.83 trillion. In addition, with this contract, it has won a total of 116 orders ($10 billion) this year, achieving 91% of the annual order target ($11 billion).

Samsung Heavy Industries (010140)Also on the same day, it announced that it had won orders for four LNG carriers worth 815 billion won. It has won orders for a total of 8 LNG carriers worth 1.63 trillion won for 3 days from the 21st. As a result, Samsung Heavy Industries’ cumulative order performance this year has risen to $5.5 billion, and has risen to the 7th ridge (65%) of this year’s order target ($84 billion).

The order balance also increased significantly. Samsung Heavy Industries’ order backlog fell to $18.6 billion at the end of August due to the new coronavirus infection (Corona 19) and the market downturn caused by low oil prices earlier this year, but increased to $22.2 billion as of the 23rd. Of the total order backlog, LNG carriers account for nearly half ($10.4 billion).

The shipbuilding industry believes that the orders for the Mozambique LNG project by Total in France have become a reality, and the orders have continued. Previously, foreign media and others said that Total will order a total of 17 LNG carriers to transport LNG to be produced at the Mozambique gas field. Initially, it was expected to receive orders at the end of August, but it is known that the contract was delayed as the charterer contract was being held simultaneously. In response, officials from Samsung Heavy Industries and Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering said, “There is nothing that can be confirmed other than the publicly announced information.”
