The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will support 13 billion won for high value-added used batteries to develop recycling technology and applied products.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 18th that from 2021 to 2024, it has decided to pursue the development and demonstration of battery application product technology after using EV and ESS.

According to the Ministry of Industry, used batteries used in electric vehicles (EV,, Electric Vehicl) for a certain period of time can be recycled in energy storage systems (ESS) and street lights.

Even if commercialization is difficult, valuable metals (nickel, cobalt, manganese, etc.) can be recovered and converted into resources.

Instead, the Ministry of Industry explained that it is necessary to prepare an appropriate evaluation plan in order to secure product reliability because it can be used for a long time in various environments.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Industry decided to invest a total of 13 billion won in national expenditure over the next four years to develop performance safety evaluation technology and mobile application products, and develop and demonstrate MWh-class ESS technology.

An official from the Ministry of Industry said, “Through this project, we plan to establish standards for evaluation and utilization of used batteries and support efficient recycling and securing competitiveness of related companies by supporting the development of various and safe products.”
