A space hurricane that emits electrons instead of water in the Earth’s arctic atmosphere was detected, the IT media Cnet reported on the 2nd (local time).

According to reports, researchers led by Shandong University in China have published the results of the first observation of a space hurricane in the upper atmosphere of the Earth’s atmosphere. Unlike the tropical storm’cyclone’ that causes a lot of rain and wind on the Earth’s surface, space hurricanes are composed of swirling plasma and electrons.

The research results were published in the international journal Nature Communications at the end of last month.

“It is unbelievable to prove this remarkable observation, as it has not been clear until now whether a space plasma hurricane exists,” said Mike Lockwood, co-author of the paper and space scientist at the University of Reading, UK.

Researchers analyzed data collected by satellites in August 2014 to observe the phenomenon of a space hurricane about 1,000 km wide swirling over the North Pole. The hurricane was found to last for about eight hours, with spiral arms exhaling electrons instead of water.

Mike Lockwood analyzed the cause of the space hurricane because solar wind energy and charged particles moved abnormally large and rapidly into the upper Earth’s atmosphere. It also revealed that this phenomenon could be found on other planets and satellites with magnetic fields and plasmas.

NASA describes space plasma as “charged particles such as electrons and ions.” Plasma, a high-energy material emitted by solar explosions, penetrates the surface of the satellite and can damage electronic devices, causing the satellite to deviate and malfunction, and is known to expose astronauts staying in outer space to higher radiation. .
