On the afternoon of the 23rd, a fire of unknown cause broke out in the Kona EV, which was being charged at a common electric vehicle charger installed at a taxi company in Yucheon-dong, Dalseo-gu, Daegu. Accordingly, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport decided to investigate the appropriateness of the recall as well as defects in the vehicle.

Hyundai Motor Company took corrective action (recall) of 77,000 Kona EVs manufactured from September 2017 to March last year as fires continued in Kona EV in October. The recall was carried out by updating the battery management system (BMS) and immediately replacing the battery if any signs of abnormality in the battery such as excessive cell-to-cell voltage deviation or rapid temperature change were found.

The Kona EV vehicle that caught fire in Daegu this time was confirmed to be the vehicle that received a recall. Including this case, since its launch in 2018, Kona EV is known to have had 14 fires in total, including 10 domestic and 4 overseas cases.
