“I am very sorry to the teachers, students, and parents.”

EBS president Kim Myung-joong apologized on the 5th for causing confusion in the school scene due to an error in the online class system. On the 5th, Yu Eun-hye, Vice Prime Minister of Social Studies and Minister of Education, visited the Emergency Situation Room of the EBS Public Learning Management System (LMS) in Jongno-gu, Seoul. On the 2nd, EBS pointed out that various errors occurred in the online class and called out a backlash from my field teachers, saying that they are “operating normally without problems with the server or system.”

However, the atmosphere changed when Deputy Prime Minister Yoo went to the on-site inspection. Apologies from EBS officials and developers followed. EBS Vice President Kim Yoo-yeol, who oversees the online class operation inspection, also said, “We are sorry for the failure to facilitate the service.” Director Lee Mi-kyung of GS ITM, one of the developers, also said, “There was a point in which the development completion was insufficient due to the tight time of five months.

The government plans to fix the error by next week, but it is unclear whether online classes will normalize. On the same day when Deputy Prime Minister Yoo started on-site inspection, an online class access failure occurred at the school site. In some schools, even in the morning of the 5th, the connection itself was not possible or the data uploaded the previous day continued to disappear. An elementary school teacher in Seoul pointed out, “Several access difficulties are continuing, such as sudden errors in schools where there were no problems,” and “I don’t know if we can solve all these problems during the weekend.”

There are voices of concern about’class blanks’ as online class errors have led to the creation of places where classes cannot be properly conducted in the first week of school. An elementary school teacher in Gyeonggi Province said, “I tried to adjust to online classes after the start of the new semester, but the disconnection was so severe that I couldn’t take classes properly. “He said. Mr. Park Mo (40, Gwanak-gu, Seoul), who raises a 4th grader daughter in elementary school, said, “In the beginning of the semester, the child is adjusting to communicate with the teacher. I confessed.

There is already an atmosphere among teachers to turn away from online classes. A high school teacher in Seoul said, “After an error occurred in the online class on the first day, I only use’ZOOM’ or’Google Classroom’.” It’s better to use it.” He added, “I will not use online classes for the time being, even if problems such as connection errors disappear after a month or two.”

The education community has criticized the government’s slow response. The National Teachers’ Workers’ Union (KTU) issued a statement about dysfunctions in online classes the day before and pointed out that “the online system should have been activated from a month before the start of school so that teachers can prepare for the new semester.” In a statement on the 2nd, the first day of school, the Practical Education Teachers’ Meeting also said, “(Online class) started school without even being able to practice. “What on earth was the Ministry of Education preparing for so much time?”
