Defense Minister Seo-wook said, “Steve Yu is a military evacuee who lost his nationality for the purpose of evacuating from military service,” regarding singer Steve Yu (Korean name Yoo Seung-jun)’s entry ban.

At a plenary meeting of the National Assembly’s National Defense Committee on the 23rd, Seo replied, when the Democratic Party member Kim Byung-ju pointed out that Steve Yu was a typical case of avoiding military service.

Minister Seo referred to Mr. Yoo as’Steve Yu’ rather than’Seung-jun Yoo’, and emphasized that “He violated the Constitution as a person who violated the Military Service Act and was imposed on military service.”

Military Manpower Administration Commissioner Mo Jong-hwa also criticized “Steve Yu is the only person who obtained US citizenship while working in the country and obtained a for-profit, and received a notice of enlistment in the country,” and said, “Yoo himself claims to be exempt from military service, which is misleading the people.”

He added, “There is an application for overseas travel permission that Mr. Yoo submitted when he left the country,” he said. “I left the country with a promise to return to the United States by what time in the few days in the application, but he was a clear evader of military service because he acquired US citizenship.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Yoo expressed a strong displeasure at having his name mentioned when dealing with issues related to evasion of military service in Korea.

On the 20th, Yoo posted on her YouTube channel,’I’m cautious to my father, Suk Hyun-jun, but I’ll say a word. of mine? Through a video titled “Don’t be damned by my name anymore,” he said, “I am not an evasion of military service, but a Korean-American overseas compatriot whose duty of military service has lapsed.” “Whenever controversy about evading military service by Korean celebrities arises, my Please don’t incite by mentioning your name.”
