Daejeon area job market’red light’ :: Daejeon Ilbo

In the aftermath of Corona 19, both the number of employed and the employment rate in Daejeon decreased, and warning lights were lit in the job market. In the Chungcheong area, all regions except the Sejong area showed a decline in the number of employed and the employment rate.

According to the Chungcheong Regional Statistics Office on the 17th, the number of employed people in Daejeon in February was 758,000, down 3.3% (26,000) from the same period last year (784,000). Compared to last year’s November (76,000 people), it was 38,000 people down.

Last month, the employment rate was 58.9%, down 1.9 percentage points from the same month last year (60.8%). For the second month since last January, the employment rate has not exceeded the 60% barrier. In particular, the decline in the employment rate in the Daejeon area was the highest in the country, and only Seoul, Gyeongbuk and Gangwon had the largest decline.

It was analyzed that the deterioration of employment was driven by a sharp decline in manufacturing and wholesale/retail/restaurant workers due to Corona 19.

In February, the number of manufacturing workers in Daejeon was 95,000, down 14.7% (16,000) from the same month last year (111,000).

The number of people decreased by 1,000 compared to last January, recording a continuous decline. The decline in wholesale, retail and lodging and food industry workers was even more severe. The number of wholesale, retail and lodging restaurant workers was 146,000, showing a significant decrease to 26,000 (15%). There were 133,000 self-employed and 36,000 daily workers, down 5.7% and 11.2%, respectively.

It seems that this is because industries affected by Corona 19 are reluctant to hire workers as a result of injunction. Accordingly, the number of inactive economically active population was 492,000, an increase of 5.9% from the same period of the previous year (464,000).

In terms of employment hours, those with less than 36 hours increased by 6.3%, while those with more than 36 hours fell by 6.8%.

The job market in the North and South Chungcheong provinces was also on the decline. The employment rate in Chungnam was 58.7%, down 0.7 percentage points from the previous year. It was found that the number of employed decreased by 0.9% (11,000) to 1.11 million.

The employment rate in Chungbuk was 60.9%, a 0.8 percentage point, and the number of employed decreased by 0.8% (7,000) to 861,000.

On the other hand, the employment rate in the Sejong area was 61.3%, an increase of 0.4 percentage points from the same month last year, becoming the only area in the Chungcheong area that increased. The number of employed was 180,000, an increase of 9,000 (5.2%).

Nationally, the economically active population declined, the number of employed and the employment rate continued to decline. The total employment rate was 58.6%, 1.4%, and the number of employed was 26365,000, a decrease of 473,000.

Public administration, national defense, and social security administration increased to 38,000, and health and social welfare service increased to 91,000, but the overall employment market was deteriorated with a decrease of 426,000 in the lodging, restaurant, and wholesale and retail businesses.

The unemployment rate rose from the previous age group to 4.9%, up 0.8 percentage points from the previous year (4.1%). Moreover, the unemployment rate for youth aged 15-29 was 10.1%, demonstrating that the job market is freezing. Reporter Lim Yong-woo
