Last year, for the first time in history, the number of deaths in Korea exceeded the number of births, and the population’Dead Cross’ occurred. Among these, the decline in the population of Daegu and Gyeongbuk was the most severe in the country.

According to the ‘2020 Birth and Death Statistics (provisional)’ released by the National Statistical Office on the 24th, last year, the population of Korea recorded a natural decline of 33,000 people. It is the first’dead cross’ in history.

Last year, the number of births was 272,400 and the number of deaths was 305,000. Since the statistics were compiled, the lowest number of births and the highest number of deaths were recorded simultaneously.

The situation in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, where desk loss has already occurred since 2019 (Daegu) and 2016 (Gyeongbuk) is much more serious.

According to KOSIS, the national statistics portal, last year, the number of births in Daegu was 11,200 and the number of deaths was 11,500, with the population of 3,300 declining naturally. This is a 6-fold increase from 2019 (-519 people) when the first natural decline occurred.

In particular, the decrease rate of births in Daegu compared to the previous year was 15.4%, the highest since statistics were prepared. It recorded the largest decline among 17 provinces nationwide.

In Gyeongbuk Province, starting in 2016 (-362 people), the natural decline of the population is intensifying for 5 consecutive years. In particular, last year’s natural population decline (12,900 births and 22,000 deaths) was 9,900, the largest decline among 17 cities and provinces nationwide.

An official from the National Statistical Office said, “The number of births has decreased due to the continued low birth rate and the number of deaths has increased due to aging.” It could be steeper,” he said.
