While a hearing for repatriation to destroy Samsung Electronics’s vice chairman Lee Jae-yong, who was charged with the case of Gukjeong Nongdan, was held on the afternoon of the 18th, civic groups in the Daegu area urged medium punishment.
With the Daegu Regional Headquarters of the Federation of Democratic Trade Unions, Daegu Gyeongbuk Promotion Committee (June), Justice Party, Democratic Party, Basic Income Party Daegu City Party, etc., together with the Daegu people, held a press conference in front of the Daegu District Court on this day and urged the court to impose medium punishment on Lee Vice Chairman. did.
They criticized, “The Seoul High Court is eager to save Lee and the Samsung chaebol by suggesting the Samsung Compliance Monitoring Committee system for improving the punishment and reducing the sentence, and reflecting it in the sentence according to the evaluation of the activity.”
“Vice-Chairman Lee, according to the purpose of the Supreme Court’s ruling, is subject to bribery of more than 5 billion won, and deserves life imprisonment or imprisonment for at least 5 years under the Special Act.” You will face it,” he warned.
Meanwhile, the 1st Criminal Division of the Seoul High Court will proceed with a trial for the detention and repatriation of Vice-Chairman Lee, who was handed over to the trial on charges such as bribery that afternoon.
Vice-Chairman Lee was arrested in February 2017 on charges of bribing former Presidents Park Geun-hye and Choi Seo-won (previously renamed Choi Soon-sil) for help with the succession of the Samsung Group’s management rights.
The first trial sentenced him to 5 years in prison for acknowledging a total of 8.9 billion won (bribery), including 7.2 billion won for horseback riding support for Choi’s daughter, Jeong Yu-ra, and 1.6 billion won for the Korea Winter Sports Gifted Center.
However, the appeals court judged most of the sums convicted in the first trial as innocent and admitted only 3.6 billion won as bribes.
Because of this, the sentence was drastically lowered, and Lee was released after being sentenced to two years and six months in prison and four years probation.
However, in August 2019, the Supreme Court’s all-encompassing body said, “We must consider 5 billion won, including the purchase cost of the horse of Jeong Yu-ra, who was judged innocent in the appeal trial, of 3.4 billion won, and 1.6 billion won sponsored by the Winter Sports Gifted Center, as guilty.”
According to the purpose of the Supreme Court’s ruling, Vice-Chairman Lee’s bribery totaled 8.6 billion won.
