Daedeok Electronics, whose sales jumped 121 times... After that, I was accompanied by Samsung for 40 years.

“I can’t forget’Anycall format’ in 1995. At that time, not only Samsung Electronics’ cell phones but also the mobile boards made by Daedeok Electronics were burned.”

President Kim Young-jae (photo) of Daedeok Co., Ltd., the holding company of Daedeok Electronics, said that Hwa Hyung-sik, when Samsung Electronics burned 150,000 defective mobile phones at its Gumi plant, became a turning point for the company to transform. He said, “I was so proud of the burning of the substrates in the phone that the quality and design and verification standards were raised,” he said. “The crisis at that time was an opportunity for both Samsung Electronics and Daedeok to take off.”

At every crisis, we are proud of’quality and technology’

Daedeok Electronics is a company specializing in substrate materials called’neural networks’ for electronic products. As of last year, 99% of sales came from substrates. In May, it was reborn as a holding company system by dividing the person into Daedeok Electronics, a business company and Daedeok, an investment company. President Kim, the second son of Daedeok Electronics’ founder, the late Chairman Kim Jeong-sik, has been the chairman of the’Hyup Seonghoe’, a group of excellent suppliers of Samsung Electronics since 2012. President Kim emphasized, “The fact that Samsung Electronics and its partners gathered to come up with a solution for each crisis led to stronger competitiveness.”

In 1983, when he joined, Daedeok Electronics was a company that manufactured TV substrates. President Kim emphasized, “At the time, Daedeok Electronics’ PCB circuit width was 30 times thicker than it is now. As Samsung expanded its business from TV to semiconductors and smartphones, sales and technological prowess also grew dramatically.” Sales from 8.8 billion won in 1980, the beginning of the Samsung transaction, jumped 121 times to 1.72 trillion won last year. The number of employees from only 280 increased 12 times to 3,500.

Daedeok Electronics’ technological prowess rose to the world level from 2005. As Samsung Electronics surpassed Sony in Japan, it became a turning point for Daedeok Electronics as well. He emphasized that “Samsung’s’super gap’ strategy was also valid for Daedeok Electronics.” It is explained that it has made a technological leap by developing a technology for miniaturizing printed circuits and introducing semiconductor lamination technology to substrates to pass Samsung’s strict standards.

‘Samsung Partners’ is a guarantee check

The medal of’Samsung’s old partner’ became a guarantee check even when expanding overseas. He recalled that “the title of Samsung’s partner company itself is competitive in the global substrate market, where Japanese companies have taken the lead,” and “Some banks have approved loans when they say’Samsung partner’.” As of 3Q, the overseas portion of Daedeok Electronics’ sales reached 43%. Recently, an order contract with a North American customer is in progress.

President Kim predicted, “The next 3-4 years will be a watershed for Daedeok Electronics to establish itself as a global company.” Last month, Daedeok Electronics decided to increase mass production of the flip chip embedded substrate (FC-BGA) from the original plan. FC-BGA, which transmits signals between the semiconductor chip and the main circuit, is a key component used in the central processing unit (CPU) of electric vehicles. It is a high value-added product that only 10 companies in the world can manufacture. When mass production begins in earnest, additional sales of 150 to 200 billion won are expected. He said, “We have been preparing the FC-BGA field in line with Samsung Electronics’ investment in non-memory semiconductors,” he said. “We are about to win orders for AI and data centers, and we are also targeting the 5th generation (5G) communication and next-generation electronic market.”
