Dad’s son who painted the Three Kingdoms… “Sneaky Jojo, similar in politics these days”

“In my father’s 『Three Kingdoms』, Jojo was portrayed as a relatively cool leader, but when he was almost killed by Gwanwoo in the red wall, Jojo complained of being a person of Gwanwoo and survived meanly. Isn’t it similar to politics these days? When I looked back at old age, I felt different from the “Three Kingdoms” I saw when I was young.”
Go Woo-young (1938-2005) The artist’s representative work, The Three Kingdoms (series 1978-80), was the first to be painted on a colored board in 43 years, said son Go Seong-eon (52, director of the painting studio Ko Woo-young). On the 15th, this full-color full-color edition (Munghak-dongne), which was released as a 10-volume paper book, was digitally scanned and colored on a black and white pen manuscript, who helped his father to work on paintings during his lifetime.

“Looking back, it’s very different…it resembles a political version these days.”

On the 26th, he met at Gimpo Goo-young’s studio on the 26th, saying, “I only put on color, but the story hasn’t changed,” he said. It makes people’s minds look closely at times, their ages, and their current lives.”

Zhuge Liang is a simple picture tone… Equipment·Kwanwoo·Jojo is difficult

The part I care about while coloring.

“Basically not too flashy. My father painted the cover picture with watercolor paints during his lifetime, but the colors of the costumes, such as helmets and cloaks, were similar to the originals of his father.”

What’s a memorable person in the coloring work?

“Zhuge Liang. The tone is simple. The face and clothes were white, so I just had to add a little shadow. (Laughs) The equipment, Kwanwoo, and Jojo were tricky because I had to pay attention to this color and that color story.”

What differentiates 『Go Woo-young The Three Kingdoms』 from other 『Three Kingdoms』

“It’s embarrassing, but I read a few pages to taste other 『Three Kingdoms』. It’s usually a grand feeling when fighting, but my father has more cartoonish imaginations than him. It’s a genocide and a grenade in one shot. Where would the grenade be at that time? Come out of the tank and shoot. Such a boldness is great.”

“The Three Kingdoms of Go Woo-young”, which has been serialized in Daily Sports since 1978, has been loved as a parody that freely crosses East and West, such as satire, humor, and UFO and Western dramas that pinpointed the powers of power people. However, the book released the following year (Wooseok Publishing Co.) was deleted and revised for reasons of violence and selection during the censorship process, and a total of 10 volumes were cut in half. 24 years later, when the complete version was released, the late painter said, “The child suffers an accident in which his limbs, legs, and trunk are shredded by something similar to a military truck at the time (omitted). Take the disabled child to the hospital for treatment. I was able to get rid of it on the street until I became a 24-year-old young man,” he said.

For artist Ko Woo-young, “Three Kingdoms” was a historical map that satirizes the times, while for his son, Director Seong-eon Go, “Three Kingdoms” was the father itself. “Every person has a father. When talking about harsh equipment, it’s the same as my father’s. Guan Woo’s solemnity is also a father. The most resemblance is Yubi. When my father married, my maternal grandfather also said,’You are an analogy.’”

What kind of father was it?

“You have always been kind to our brothers and sisters. There was certainly an unspoken pressure to do what I had to do. (Laughs) It should be said to be a maker of the atmosphere in the house, but even among acquaintances, it led to a high level of humor.”

The high painter had a thorough attitude as an observer. Even when the left eye was on the verge of blindness in the 90s, he left behind a picture of a visible landscape with a burst of blood. It was always a pleasant attitude.
Goh said, “When my father played golf (due to the left eye) and the score was messed up because the distance could not be adjusted, he joked that if the putt fits just right, he joked that it was’one eye’.”

My father’s smallest comic book is not 『Three Kingdoms』 and 『Iljimae』

The brothers and sisters inherited their father’s sense of art and both went to art college. The third person who kept the old painter’s side was the late chieftain. “I’m a baby I don’t even remember, but my father said, “I’m closing my daily newspaper series at home, and I was curious, so I looked at it from the side and scattered ink on a valuable manuscript. It was said that since I didn’t even know what to say, I grabbed a pencil and scribbled. Since high school, I was next to my father to help with background work by dipping food on a brush.”
“Since I was young, I didn’t know how to do anything other than painting, so I naturally did art.” “Even when I was studying art in earnest, if I took drawing or painting, my father thought it was a different field than he did,” he said. “I also looked the most like me, and when I saw my father, I must have always been a shy and clumsy son who lacked something. That’s why I was more attached to it, and I felt sorry for not being able to help.”
After studying illustration at the Graduate School of the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York, USA in 2002, he returned home to the news of his father’s cancer outbreak. Twenty years have passed since he was called’Ko Woo-young, director of the painting studio’ on behalf of his family. He also became a father with three daughters. As for my father’s first hand, I heard this cartoon, not 『Three Kingdoms』 or 『Iljimae』.

“Have you ever drawn cartoons about your family. It’s a short episode that contains everyday life, and I like that cartoon the most. From anecdotes expressing oneself who was not courageous during the 1·4 retreat, to memories that were embarrassed when they first met their mother. There is no exaggeration and it is calm. I couldn’t find the original, so only a part of it was recorded in the catalog during the 1st anniversary of my father.”

Even now, he said, “On the last day of each year or on January 1st, I came to the office and said to my father,’Thank you for this year. Thank you.’ I feel like he’s always next to me.” “I’m living with a family now, so if my father was there when my life was difficult and there was no answer, I could say’What should I do in this case?’ I will get it, but that is the most regrettable.” “I think you went too fast. These days, in my mid-60s, it’s a waste of time.”

After the late painter passed away in 2005 due to a recurrence of colon cancer, he dreamed of’Go Woo-young Museum’, “I thought it would be soon because I went up and down from the memorial war. I don’t know when it will be, but there seems to be a time.” Regarding the publication of the color board, “I hope this interest in my father lasts a long time, but when will this happen again soon? I’m sure it will be quiet,” he said. “The book that is over 40 years old (“The Three Kingdoms Go”) is still on the market. It is an unusual vitality. It is the artist’s ability. It’s great to see someone who has passed away for 15 years on the media.” Suho-ji, serialized in the 1970s, is also being reprinted in an unrefined version.
“I think my father handled the conflict or conflict between humans and humans very carefully, as was 『Iljimae』 and 『Keokjeong Lim』. I also try to draw a picture with my heart these days, but it’s still a long way. I try to draw more like my father.”
