Mid- to long-term R&D strategies to achieve carbon neutrality in the industrial and energy sectors by 2050 will be established.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 4th that it had held meetings with related organizations such as the Korea Institute of Industrial Science and Technology and the Institute for Energy Economics and discussed the plan to establish a carbon-neutral R&D strategy in the field of industry and energy.

Energy (37% emission) and industry (36% emission) account for the largest share of domestic carbon emissions.

In particular, Korea has a carbon-centered and energy-intensive industrial structure, so the 2050 carbon neutrality is a challenging goal that is not easy to achieve.

An official from the Ministry of Industry said, “Current technology is carbon-neutral.”

To this end, the Ministry of Industry is planning to organize 16 working groups for each major industry in the energy supply and energy demand sectors.

The plan is to analyze the carbon emission status and emission mechanism by sector, derive key reduction technologies, and present a staged technology acquisition schedule by 2050.

In order to secure technology, the government, the private sector, and industry-academia-researchers will also propose a plan for role-sharing, and if necessary, global open innovation (open innovation) plans such as the introduction of overseas technology will be reviewed.

The Ministry of Industry and Industry plans to operate the working group in earnest on the occasion of this meeting to finish strategic revenue by the third quarter of this year and hold public hearings for the industry.
