[에너지경제신문 여헌우 기자] A plan is being promoted to simplify the immigration process for businessmen going abroad to procure automotive semiconductors. It is a support plan in the form of helping corona 19 vaccinations and exempting the period of self-isolation.

On the 10th, the government held the ‘6th Big Three Promotion Meeting for Innovative Growth’ at the Seoul Government Complex, and jointly announced the’Short-term supply and demand response of automotive semiconductors and strategies to strengthen industrial capacity’.

The government is planning to support rapid customs clearance for semiconductor parts for vehicles to prevent disruption in automobile production, and to apply emergency support systems such as rapid customs clearance for raw and subsidiary materials and special cases for air transport freight if necessary. For businessmen entering and leaving the country to procure semiconductors for vehicles, a rapid examination for exemption from self-isolation will be promoted, and corona 19 vaccination will also be promoted.

It is also planning to provide emergency support for the performance evaluation of semiconductor parts and modules for vehicles developed by domestic companies to enable replacement supply in a short period of time.

As a mid- to long-term countermeasure, it has decided to support 204.7 billion won by 2022 for the development of core semiconductor technology (R&D) for future vehicles. It is also considering a plan to support the conversion and remodeling of existing non-vehicle semiconductors for vehicles. Support for the production of prototypes to examine the possibility of mass production of automotive semiconductors will also be strengthened.

In recent years, domestic and overseas automakers are disrupting the production of finished cars due to unstable supply and demand for vehicle semiconductors. This is because the supply of semiconductors for vehicles is insufficient due to a faster-than-expected recovery in demand for automobiles and excess demand across semiconductors.

The global automotive semiconductor market is worth $38 billion. Several global companies such as NXP and Infineon are leading the way. The domestic automobile industry relies on 98% of vehicle semiconductors abroad.

The government expects that the disruption in supply and demand for automotive semiconductors will continue until at least the third quarter. Accordingly, to improve the short-term supply and demand situation, it was announced that it is conducting consultations with major countries, overseas semiconductor companies, and associations using public-private cooperation channels.
