He finished third in speed skating 1,500m at the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics in France, and is the first Japanese woman to win an Olympic medal in speed skating. He participated in the Summer Olympics cycle event three times.
Hashimoto was elected for the first time in the 1995 House of Councilors election and is currently the 5th elected, and has been serving as Olympic Minister since September 2019.
Olympic experience is abundant, but past actions are controversial.
In 2014, a Japanese weekly magazine reported that he kissed the figure skater Daisuke Takahashi forcibly.
Hashimoto was then the president of the Japan Skating Federation and was pointed out as a de facto sexual violence using his dominant position.
Attorney Masaki Kito, director of the Link Law Firm, tweeted about Hashimoto, saying, “I don’t think it’s suitable as a successor to Mori, whose gender is a problem because of sexual harassment.”
Several photos of Hashimoto hugging and kissing a presumed Takahashi person were posted on Twitter.
In the latest issue of Japan’s weekly magazine Shukanbun-shun, released on the 17th, “Hashimoto’s sexual harassment is not one of Takahashi’s cases.” It was reported that he had testified that there was.
Apart from whether it is appropriate to appoint Hashimoto as the chairman, some point out that the organizational committee’s way of appointment is uncertain.
According to the Tokyo newspaper, the organizing committee remained silent over reports that it had narrowed down the candidate to Hashimoto.
It did not provide briefings or interviews on the selection, but only distributed materials stating that the second meeting for candidate review was held on the 17th and the third meeting will be held on the 18th.
Earlier, before resigning, Mori gave up in the face of a backlash of being a closed-door officer while trying to appoint former Japan Football Association president Saburo Kawabuchi (85, 85), a close friend of her own.
