“The difference between’Sweet Home’ and other dramas (with monsters, etc.) is that it deals with the most Korean material. Sweet Home contains Korean stories such as affection, faith, and family values and friendship.”
Director Lee Eung-bok (photo), who directed the Netflix original series Sweet Home, explained the difference between the existing creatures (genre with monsters, etc.) and Sweet Home. Sweet Home tells the bizarre and shocking story of a reclusive, lonely high school student, Hyeon-su, in an apartment that moves after the loss of his family. The webtoon of the same name is the original.
In the original, various monsters appear. From monsters full of muscular body to monsters with only eyes and monsters without heads. As soon as the news that dramatization was going on was announced, fans gathered interest in how it would be expressed in video.
The drama was released on the 18th, and the review wasn’t bad. No, it was rather good. The monsters expressed in the webtoon were put on the screen as they were. The dark atmosphere of the original work was also well utilized. Actors also performed excellent performances. As a result, it ranked first on the Netflix charts in eight countries, including Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Qatar, Thailand and the Philippines.
“The sweet home was not made for the overseas market. However, it seems that I was able to confirm a little how the most Korean values could be communicated (to the world) in terms of this (overseas) grade. I am grateful that sweet homes have been communicated around the world.”
In the drama and the original, people suddenly turn into monsters. The cause is unknown. However, it is described that the desires each have have influences their transformation into monsters. Director Lee said he wanted to discriminate from the original in the process of becoming a monster.
The drama ended with episode 10 first. Nothing has been decided on Season 2. However, Lee said, “If given the opportunity, it would be nice if we could collect things that are not satisfied with the results and reflect them in (season 2).”
