The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (hereinafter referred to as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport) announced that Ulsan and Incheon metropolitan cities were selected as local governments to implement the project in 2021 to build a large-capacity hydrogen charging station for the introduction of a 10-ton large-sized hydrogen truck as part of promoting the hydrogen economy in the transport sector.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport conducted a public offering for three weeks from December 7th, 2020 to large and basic local governments nationwide, and formed an expert evaluation committee on hydrogen, transportation, logistics, and urban planning to ensure project feasibility, location conditions, and facility utilization and operation. Two of the three organizations that participated in the competition were selected by comprehensively evaluating the plans.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport) aims to promote the pilot operation project (2021-2022, five 10-ton class plans to operate) for the conversion of diesel trucks to hydrogen trucks in the private sector according to the’Hydrogen Economy Revitalization Roadmap’ announced in January 2019 Business agreements have been signed with hydrogen vehicle related ministries (Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Ministry of Environment), logistics companies (CJ Korea Express, Hyundai Glovis, Coupang), and vehicle manufacturer (Hyundai Motors) to promote the hydrogen truck pilot project.

The construction of this hydrogen charging station is significant as it is the first charging station necessary for the promotion of the hydrogen freight vehicle pilot project, and it is the first start of the operation of a hydrogen-based logistics network in the future.

Both Ulsan metropolitan cities and Incheon metropolitan cities, which were selected as business operators, plan to build hydrogen charging stations within this year using freight car rest areas, which are logistics bases located near ports and industrial/logistics complexes.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has established a cooperation system with local governments and participating organizations to ensure that the hydrogen truck charging station construction project of the two local governments can be carried out smoothly, regularly checking the progress of each project step, and solving difficulties in a timely manner, while providing future industry demand and demonstration. It plans to gradually expand the scale of construction of a hydrogen freight vehicle charging station by referring to the project progress.

Bae-sung Kim, head of the logistics policy section of the Ministry of Land, “The conversion of hydrogen trucks is a field that has a greater environmental effect than any other field, and is a must-go for the sustainable development of the logistics industry. I will go out.”
