According to the ‘2019 Trademark Usage Transaction Status’ announced by the Fair Trade Commission on the 27th, last year, companies with total numbers had higher rates of paid use of trademark rights and the ratio of trademark usage fees to sales than those that did not. The percentage of paid-use trademark rights of the group with total number was 70.9%, and the group without total number was 33.3%.

The ratio of trademark usage fees to sales of the total number of groups was 0.28% on average, 14 times higher than that of the group without total numbers (0.02%). The total family share (simple average) of 69 companies that receive trademark usage fees is 25.79%. Among them, 36 companies (52%) had more than 20% of the total family ownership.

Among companies that receive trademark usage fees, those with a high total family ownership have higher usage fees compared to sales. The ratio of sales to 36 such companies was 1.32%. Companies that received trademark usage fees with less than 20% of the total family share were 0.05%, and those of the group without the total number were 0.02%.

The group of companies with the largest annual trademark usage fee was SK. Of the 64 business groups (quasi-large business groups) subject to disclosure, two of SK and LG (267.3 billion won) had a trademark license fee of more than 200 billion won. SK Group had the largest number of affiliates paying for trademark rights, with 61 affiliates. There were 13 LG.

The number of groups that paid for trademark rights in 2019 was 42, an increase of 5 from the previous year (37). The amount was 1.418.9 billion won, an increase of 100.5 billion won from the previous year (1.3184 billion won). The annual trademark license fee has been increasing for the third year since recording KRW 1.153 trillion in 2017.

Of the 42 groups that paid usage fees in 2019, 39 had their trademark usage fees based on their existing sales. The rate of use of trademark rights was highest in the order of Hankook Tire (0.75%), Samsung and Samyang (0.5%), and CJ (0.4%). KT·S-Oil·IMM Investment received usage fees through other methods, such as receiving a fixed amount.
