Congestion on the New Year’s Day Expressway… “The peak in both directions at 1 PM”

On the 12th, New Year’s Day, traffic congestion is expected on highways across the country as return and return vehicles flock.

According to the Korea Expressway Corporation, the time it takes to reach major cities across the country from Seoul toll booths as of 10 am on this day is Busan 4 hours 50 minutes, Gwangju 3 hours 40 minutes, and Gangneung 3 hours 10 minutes.

The Road Corporation predicted that the two-way congestion will be severe from morning to late night as the returning and returning vehicles are coming out on the highway together. Congestion begins at 8 am in some sections, reaches its peak at 1 pm, and is expected to resolve around 10 pm. The congestion is expected to be the most severe from noon to 1:00 pm in the direction of homecoming, and from 1:00 to 2:00 pm in the direction of return to home.

As of 9:20 a.m. on that day, cars are moving slowly in a total of 7.52km on the Gyeongbu Expressway towards Busan, from Hannam Interchange to Seocho Interchange, Geumto Junction to Daewang Pangyo Interchange. In particular, traffic congestion occurs in the 2km section between Banpo and Seocho and near the Dongtan junction.

The West Coast Expressway is driving slowly in the 3.8km section of Palgok Junction in the Mokpo direction to Maesong Intersection. Cars are walking tortoise in the 5.23km section of Hanam Interdummok~Sangok Junction towards Nami of Jungbu Expressway, and the Yeongdong Expressway is congested in the 2km section near Yongin~Yangji Tunnel in Gangneung.

The national traffic volume for the Lunar New Year holidays is expected to be 4.29 million units. The Korea Highway Corporation estimates that 390,000 vehicles will move from the metropolitan area to the local area and 380,000 units from the local area to the metropolitan area.
