On the 19th, Chairman of the KCTU Yang Gyeong-su said, “I will recommend five workers of the Minimum Wage Committee.” As it had an edge over the KFTU in the number of union members, it was planning to get one more, but the KFTU immediately protested, saying, “A one-sided announcement without agreement”.

Chairman Yang said, “It will be three years since the KCTU has held the position of the 1st KCTU, and it plans to recommend five members of the Minimum Wage Committee, which is a commonsense proposal.”

Currently, there are a total of 27 members of the Minimum Wage Committee, and each consists of 9 members of workers, employers, and public interest committees. Of these, it is customary for 9 workers to recommend 5 by the KCTU and 4 by the KCTU. It means that the KCTU has an upper hand in the number of members, so ask for a change.

The Korean Federation of Trade Unions made it clear that it was difficult to accept. A high-ranking official of the KFTU said, “It was announced unilaterally without going through any consultations with us,” and said, “The KFTU will recommend five people as before.”

The minimum wage law does not specifically stipulate the share of members of the two trade unions. Regarding the appointment of members, the executive decree requires the president to commission workers members from among those recommended by the union, a union organization. An official from the Ministry of Employment and Labor said, “It is a matter to be decided through consultation between the two unions.

It can be interpreted that the KCTU’s move was first triggered in a situation where a’share fight’ between the two trade unions is inevitable with a government-related committee in the future. In the authority of recommending members of the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s Finance and Operation Committee and labor committees at all levels, the KCTU has been given a slightly insufficient share of the Korean Federation of Trade Unions.

Chairman Yang said, “If there are various government committees and the labor sector occupies a single recommendation for members, only the Korean Federation of Trade Unions has entered,” he said.
