The African swine fever (ASF) virus was detected in six dead wild boars found in Yeongwol, Gangwon-do, and the quarantine authorities took an emergency.

ASF confirmed in 6 wild boar carcasses
Found one after another since the 28th of last month in Yeongwol

According to Gangwon-do on the 3rd, six wild boar dead bodies found outside the wide area fence during a search around Geummari, Jucheon-myeon, Yeongwol-gun on the 1st, were confirmed to be infected with ASF around 3 pm the previous day. The location of the wild boar where the ASF virus was confirmed this time is 600m to 1km southwest or southeast of the site of the first confirmed dead boar dead in Yeongwol on the 28th of last month.

The quarantine authorities are tense as ASF occurs one after another in Yeongwol-gun, the southernmost tip of Gangwon-do. Gangwon-do animal quarantine policy officer Hong Gyeong-soo said, “ASF virus was confirmed in Yeongwol, which is about 90 km from the southernmost point of Chuncheon and 80 km south from the point of Inje outbreak. We are also conducting farm quarantine such as inspection, farm access control, and entry restrictions.

The quarantine authorities have taken measures to restrict the movement of quarantine farms located 4.1 km from the ASF virus detection point. In addition, the prevention and disinfection of pig farms in Wonju, Hoengseong and Pyeongchang areas adjacent to Yeongwol-gun is being strengthened. In the 10km quarantine zone, 5 farms (1 farm in Yeongwol and 4 farms in Jecheon) are raising 5060 pigs.

In Chungbuk Province, a control post was installed at the entrance of four pig farms in Jecheon, adjacent to Yeongwol, and the farm and surrounding roads were disinfected. All of the results of a close examination of pigs from these farms were negative. However, the quarantine authorities reinforced quarantine prevention by conducting telephone surveillance for 17 pig farms in Danyang, which is adjacent to Jecheon.
