The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced the ‘5th Comprehensive National Health Promotion Plan’, which contains health policy directions and tasks for the next 10 years at the 2nd Social Relations Ministers’ Meeting on the 27th.

The 5th Comprehensive National Health Promotion Plan aims to extend the health life of the people to 73.3 years old by 2030. It has prepared 28 key tasks across six divisions. The related year’s budget is 2.5 trillion won.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare is planning to raise the domestic tobacco health promotion fee to the average level of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The OECD average tobacco price, published by the World Health Organization (WHO), is $7.36. It costs about 8,100 won in Korean money. Currently, the domestic cigarette price is 4,500 won per pack, or 4 dollars.

“There is a bill proposed to the National Assembly to increase the health promotion fee,” said Isran, director of health policy at the Ministry of Health and Welfare. “In 10 years, we will be able to raise the fee.”

The Ministry of Health and Welfare plans to strengthen regulations by expanding the area of ​​warning pictures drawn on cigarette cases from 50% to 75%.
