Chung-Ang University Hospital lowers depression in women who consumed high dietary fiber before menopause

A study found that women who consumed a lot of dietary fiber before menopause had a lower risk of developing depression. In modern people, depression is one of the mental disorders, and it has emerged as a social problem as it causes interpersonal problems or suicide.

Chung-Ang University Hospital is Professor Jeongha Kim and Yoonseon Kim of Family MedicinePhoto> A major doctor announced on the 24th that he recently published a research paper that analyzed the relationship between dietary fiber intake and depression in premenopausal women. This research paper was published in the February 2021 issue of Menopause-The Journal for The North American Menopause Society, an SCI(E)-level international academic journal.

Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey, the research team measured the average dietary fiber intake of women with and without depression in order to analyze the correlation between dietary fiber intake according to menopause and depression in 5807 women.

As a result, average dietary fiber intake among all women was higher in the non-depressed group than in the depressed group. In particular, premenopausal women were found to have significantly higher dietary fiber intake in the non-depressed group than in the depressed group.

In addition, it was found that there was a correlation with a 5% decrease in the prevalence of depression as the daily dietary fiber intake increased by 1g/1000kcal in premenopausal women, and this difference did not appear in postmenopausal women, the research team explained.

“The inverse correlation between dietary fiber intake and depression in premenopausal women identified in this study is likely to be related to the interaction between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system, the’intestinal-brain axis’ interaction, and female hormones. “We hope that it will become a preliminary study to reveal the causal relationship in the future and contribute to preventing depression through non-drug approaches such as dietary change.”
