(Shanghai = Yonhap News) Correspondent Cha Dae-woon = China’s fast-growing short video-sharing platform, The Woo-in, has sprinkled over 200 billion won worth of salary money from a state-run broadcaster’s Chunje (Chinese New Year) program.

According to Pengpai on the 13th, Byte Dance (Chinese name Zizetiaodong<字節跳動>), TikTok’s local service in China Electronic Hongbao (紅包) worth 1.2 billion yuan (about 260 billion won) was sprayed.

Hongbao is a red envelope in China that contains tax money and various gifts.

Among the viewers who participated in the lottery event held in The Wooin application in connection with the live broadcast, millions of viewers received Hongbao, which ranged from as little as 66 yuan to as much as 21 yuan.

In China, for many years, large Internet companies have been sponsoring digital Hongbao in Chunjelian Hwanhui.

Tencent’s WeChat and Alibaba’s Alipay launched electronic Hongbao worth 500 million yuan and 800 million yuan respectively in this program in 2015 and 2016.

Despite spending a large amount of money overnight, large Chinese internet companies see the sponsorship of Chunjelian Hwanhui, which is watched by hundreds of millions of Chinese at the same time, as an excellent opportunity to expand users.

In order for viewers to participate in the digital Hongbao lottery, the application must be installed, so new customers can naturally expand.

The Wooin is looking forward to expanding users of the electronic payment service that has just been released through this sponsorship.

Zhang Yi, an analyst at research firm iiMedia, told South China Morning Post (SCMP), “The Wooin’s campaign aims to expand e-payment services,” and “I think it will work.”

The Wooin, which has grown rapidly as a short video platform, has been expanding its business area through e-commerce and games since last year. The Wooin has already exceeded 600 million users.

The Wooin’s sister service, TikTok, is gaining great popularity worldwide, including the United States and Korea.

When Trump was in office, the U.S. administration raised concerns about the leakage of user information, and pressured Bytedance to sell its stake to a U.S. company, but eventually lost its power due to the US court’s brakes.

Currently, the market value of Byte Dance, which has both TikTok and The Wooin, reaches 100 billion dollars (about 110 trillion won), which is evaluated as the world’s largest unicorn.
