“Available only after 3 years after the existing nationality contest…the only way to get permission for a sports club”

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Gyeong-yoon = Former Korean short-track national team leader Lim Hyo-jun, 25, who chose to naturalize to China to participate in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, is unlikely to be able to step on the Olympic stage.

Im Hyo-jun, who was disciplined in Korea, made an irrational number of’naturalization in China’ in order to participate in the Beijing Winter Olympics, but his chances of participating in the Olympics decreased because he did not understand the rules properly.

An official from the Korea Sports Association said on the 9th that “Im Hyo-jun cannot participate in the Beijing Olympics as a Chinese national team if the Korea Sports Association opposes it according to Article 41, Paragraph 2 of the Olympic Charter of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).”

According to the charter, in order for an athlete to change nationality to compete in the Olympics, three years must pass after the international competition in which the previous nationality took place.

Lim Hyo-jun was a Korean national player on March 10, 2019, and has competed in the International Ice Skating Federation (ISU) World Championships, so after March 10, 2022, he can compete as the Chinese national team.

The Beijing Olympics will start on February 4th next year and end on the 20th.

Unless the Beijing Olympics are delayed due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection (Corona 19) or there is no special reason, Hyo-jun Lim will be difficult to compete in the event.

Although there are exceptions, it is unlikely that benefits will be given to Hyo-jun Lim.

According to the Charter, the grace period can be shortened or canceled if the former National Olympic Committee (NOC), the current nationality NOC, and the International Federation by Sport (IF) agree.

This means that if the Korea Sports Association allows it, Hyo-jun Lim can participate in the Beijing Olympics as a representative of China.

However, it is expected that the athletic meet will not allow Lim Hyo-jun to participate in the Olympics.

This is because when Lim Hyo-jun participates in the Chinese national team, it can have a decisive influence on the medals of Korean players. It is also burdensome in that it leaves a bad precedent.

An official from the sports association said, “It is difficult to reveal an official position in the situation where the Chinese national team has not yet played a selection game.” The possibility of allowing him to participate in the Olympics seems small.”

There is also a case of not being able to stand on the Olympic stage after changing nationality like Lim Hyo-jun.

Yoo-min Won, a disabled Nordic skier with Canadian nationality, was naturalized to Korea to participate in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Paralympic Games held in her home country.

Although the subject of the Olympics (IOC) and the subject of the Paralympic Games (International Paralympic Committee/IPC) are different, the content of the regulations is the same.

Meanwhile, Lim Hyo-joon’s management company announced on the 6th that “Im Hyo-joon made a decision to naturalize in China because of the difficulties he could not do when he continued his career as a player.”

Hyojun Lim was the national team ace who won the men’s 1,500m gold medal and the men’s 500m bronze medal at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

However, in June 2019, at the Jincheon National Athletes’ Village Weight Training Center, he was charged with pulling the pants of a junior of the national team to reveal body parts during physical training, and he walked downhill.

Lim Hyo-jun, who had been suspended for a year from the Korea Ice Skating Federation, requested a reconsideration from the Sports Fair Committee of the Korea Sports Association, but did not achieve his intention.

Im Hyo-jun filed a lawsuit against the Ice Skating Federation in March last year to confirm the invalidity of disciplinary action, and in November of that year, he was acquitted in an appeals trial related to the alleged harassment.
