Amidst the number of Myanmar citizens’ sacrifices due to the military and police’s hard-line repression, anti-Chinese sentiment is reaching a dangerous level at the local level.

This is interpreted as an antipathy for China’s taking a position that prioritizes the safety of its own companies and citizens while ignoring the sacrifices of Myanmar citizens who lost their lives in the fight against the military coup.

According to Reuters news agency on the 15th (local time), the Chinese embassy in Myanmar made a statement urging the government to strict violence and punish the perpetrators in relation to the fire at the clothing factory in Hlayingthaya that occurred the day before. Running. Comments are written in Myanmar, and around 29,000, about half, have emoticons with smiley faces as if laughing at the Chinese government.

“If you want to do business here, you have to respect the citizens of Myanmar,” said A. Tinja Maung, an activist leading the protests. “Hey, Hlaingta. We are proud of you.”

The Chinese embassy in Myanmar issued a statement shortly after the fire broke out, saying, “I urge Myanmar to take more effective measures to stop all acts of violence and to punish the perpetrators,” and demanded that the government authorities guarantee the lives and property of Chinese companies and personnel. The Chinese embassy also claimed that many Chinese employees were injured by attacks by unidentified people at the time of the fire.

According to local media, Irrawaddy, on the afternoon of the 14th, fires broke out in two clothing factories located in Hlayingthaya Industrial Complex in Yangon, the largest city. One of these is a garment factory invested with Chinese capital and completed business registration in 2018. The other is a shoe factory invested by Taiwan.

China’s state-run media, China International Television (CGTN), reported that 20 people riding motorcycles broke into the complex with iron rods, axes and gasoline, setting fire to the front door and warehouse. The Hlaingtai Industrial Complex is currently investigating the cause of the fire. Irrawaddy said on the 14th that a demonstration to condemn the military coup took place in Hlayingthaya, and that at least three of the participants were killed and five were injured due to bloody suppression by the military and police.

Meanwhile, China officially regards the military coup in Myanmar as an’internal affair’, taking a different stance from Western countries such as the United States. As a result, anti-China sentiment is growing day by day, with citizens protesting every day in front of the Chinese embassy in Myanmar to withdraw their support for the military.
