The number of actual infected people in Wuhan, Hubei Province, where the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) first spread earlier this year, could be 10 times higher than official statistics, the US CNN reported on the 29th (local time).
This report came amid controversy that the Chinese government had concealed and reduced the severity of the disease at the time the Corona 19 spread around Wuhan earlier this year. CNN reported that corona19 antibodies were found in blood samples of about 4.43% of Wuhan residents, citing research data from the China Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Considering that Wuhan’s population is 11 million, it is calculated that the number of infected with Corona 19 could reach 500,000. This is ten times more than official statistics released by health authorities. The number of corona19 infected people in the region officially announced by Wuhan health authorities is 5354.
China’s CDC analyzed the blood samples of 34,000 people obtained after the first pandemic of Corona 19 in China to derive these results. The targets of the analysis included not only Wuhan, but also other cities in Hubei Province, as well as residents of Beijing and Shanghai where corona19 confirmed cases were reported.
Looking at the antibody formation rate by region, it can be seen that Corona 19 spread mainly in Wuhan region earlier this year. Excluding Wuhan, only 0.44% of residents of other cities in Hubei Province had corona19 antibodies. In the blood of 12,000 residents outside Hubei Province, only two of them had corona19 antibodies.
Since antibodies are usually formed in the body after suffering a viral infectious disease, the presence of antibodies means that you have had the disease. However, this study only estimates the number of infected people through antibody sample analysis, but the results of the investigation do not mean the final number of confirmed cases, China CDC said.
Yan Zhonghuang, a senior researcher at the American Foreign Relations Association (CFR), pointed out that at the time of the first Corona 19 outbreak in Wuhan, asymptomatic infections were not included in the number of confirmed cases, and the results of this study show the problem of such reduced reporting.
Earlier, CNN cited an internal document from the Hubei Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported by an anonymous Chinese medical worker at the end of last month, and the central government reduced the number of confirmed and dead people counted by the Wuhan health authorities, and even the health authorities had poor equipment. It reported that it was not able to accurately determine the actual damage scale. According to the document, on February 7, this year, the central government of China announced the number of confirmed cases at 2,478, but on the same day, the Hubei provincial health authorities identified 5,918 new cases.
