China’s Mars probe, Tianyuan (Question about Heaven), sent the first image of Mars to Earth, leaving one week after arriving on Mars.

The National Space Agency of China (CNSA) unveiled the image of Mars taken by the high-resolution camera of Tianyuan 1 on the 5th. The published photo was taken 2.2 million kilometers from Mars. An image showing the location of Mars’ terrain was also transmitted. Each number in the picture represents the Archidalia Plain (1), Krisé Plain (2), Meridaani Plain (3), Skiaparelli Crater (4), and Mariner Valley (5).

Tianwon 1, launched on July 23 last year (local time), approached Mars by 1.1 million kilometers as of the 5th. The spacecraft is expected to enter Mars orbit on the 10th. CNSA has completed a fourth orbital maneuver for this, and said all systems on the spacecraft are in good working order. After entering orbit, the probe landing is scheduled for mid-May.

Tianwon 1, the first Mars probe to operate a tracker, lander, and rover at the same time, weighs only the size of a golf cart and weighs 240kg. It is planned to be operated for the purpose of finding water and ice on Mars and analyzing soil and rock components.

If China succeeds in landing and exploration on Mars, it will become the third country in the world to land on Mars after the United States and Russia.
