At CES2021, the world’s largest IT and home appliance exhibition, domestic LG Electronics and Chinese manufacturer TCL met over’rollable phones’. LG Electronics unveiled the real thing of’LG Rollable (tentative name)’ through a media conference on the 11th local time, while TCL showed a concept video focusing on rollable phones. Amidst the nerve wars between both manufacturers arose over the title of’the first in the world’, analysts say that the release of LG Electronics will be one step ahead in the IT industry.

LG Electronics revealed the driving method and appearance of the LG Rollable, which extends to both sides for about 5 seconds in a video in which President Bong-seok Kwon appeared as a narrator. However, specific designs or product specifications were not included.

In the video, when the user uses the LG rollable in the form of a general smartphone and opens the screen that was rolled up at the back, the rectangular screen expands to the size of a tablet PC.

According to information released on the Google developer site last month, LG Rollable is estimated to be a smartphone in the form of an OLED (organic light emitting diode) screen rolled up inside the device when a button is pressed. Normally, it is 6.8 inches (resolution 1080×2428), and if you pull the screen to the right, you can use it as a 7.4 inches (1600x) tablet PC size. It is characterized by being able to automatically switch the screen to a phone mode (20:9), a video mode (16:9), and a productivity mode (3:2).

TCL, a famous Chinese manufacturer, also introduced the concept of a new rollable phone on the same day.

The rollable phone developed by X Lab under TCL is similar to the LG Rollable in that it is usually used at 6.7 inches and then stretches to 7.8 inches by tapping the screen. AMOLED (active organic light-emitting diode) display is used, and the screen is not wider than the LG Rollable, but is elongated upward. It is similar to the square shape of a foldable phone because it is longer in width and shorter in height than general smartphones.

TCL announced that it plans to release a new smartphone within this year through a foreign press.

On the 11th, “CNET,” an IT media outlet, announced on the 11th that “the head of global marketing at TCL Mobile Division will release a mobile phone with a flexible display within 2021”. “But whether the device will be a rollable phone, folder I didn’t confirm whether it would be black phone.”
