Due to the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) epidemic, children’s weight is increasing day by day as they are unable to attend school and the life of’Zipcock’ continues. In addition, vitamin D deficiency due to this was also observed.

According to the article “The effect of the Corona 19 pandemic on children’s obesity and vitamin D status” by An Moon-bae, a professor of pediatrics and adolescents at the Catholic University of Medicine, published in the Journal of the Korean Medical Association (JKMS), from March to August last year, 4~14. As a result of observing the change in 226 years old children, the proportion of children who are overweight or obese increased from 23.9% to 31.4%. If your body weight (kg) divided by the square of your height (㎡) is 23 or more, you are overweight, and 25 or more is obese.

In addition, compared to before Corona 19, the number of overweight children increased from 21 to 29, and the number of obese children from 33 to 42. Of the children in the normal weight range, 18 became overweight, and 4 became obese. In particular, the concentration of 250HD (vitamin D) in blood required for bone growth also decreased from 23.8 mg per dl to 18.9 mg.

Professor Ahn said that as children only stay at home as a social distancing measure due to the Corona 19 epidemic, physical activity and exercise opportunities are greatly reduced.

He added that overweight and obesity in children have a short-term effect on physical and mental health, as well as a long-term risk of metabolic diseases such as diabetes, so they should be managed through balanced nutrition and physical exercise.
