Yoshiro Mori, chairman of the Tokyo Olympics Organizing Committee, has announced his resignation.

It has been 9 days since the remarks in question.

<모리 요시로 / 도쿄올림픽 조직위원회 회장> “I am going to resign from the post of chairman today. If my presence in preparation for the July Olympics gets in the way, it is unacceptable.”

President Mori said that the inappropriate remarks caused great confusion, and said he apologized for causing trouble to many.

The organizing committee formed a committee to select the successor of Chairman Mori and decided to enter the formal process for the replacement of the chairman.

According to the organizing committee’s articles of association, the board of directors has the authority to appoint and dismiss the chairman, and the board of directors is required to be appointed among the directors of the organizing committee.

Local media reports that the former speed skating Olympic medalist Seiko Hashimoto is being considered as a strong candidate.

Earlier, it was known that Mori tried to appoint former Japan Football Association President Saburo Kawabuchi as a successor without going through the procedures of the organizing committee, and controversy over the ‘secret greeting’ arose.

As Chairman Mori succumbs to domestic and foreign pressure and resigns, the Japanese government and the ruling party are likely to suffer.

The majority of LDP lawmakers were silent or even advocated for Mr. Mori’s remarks, a former prime minister and who had considerable political influence after retirement.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga also responded passively, saying it was a problem with the organizing committee because it was an independent administrative corporation.
