Paik Il-jae is a Buddhist ritual in which the deceased is sacrificed on the 100th day of his death. The bereaved family had previously stayed at the 49jae-do Jingwansa of President Lee Kun-hee.
Chairman Lee’s eldest son, Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, was unable to attend because he was imprisoned for the Gukjeong Nongdan trial. Instead, Vice-Chairman Lee’s eldest son paid the ashes. In the 49th year, 7 grandchildren of President Lee stayed there, but only the son of Vice Chairman Lee attended Paik Il-jae on this day.
This is because the’prohibition of private gatherings from 5 people’ was applied under the influence of the 2.5 steps of social distancing applied by Seoul. In the case of family gatherings and families with different living spaces, only 4 people can attend rituals such as 49 jae.
The bereaved family arrived at Jingwansa Temple at around 9:40 am, divided into three cars, and prayed for the deceased in a quiet and solemn atmosphere.
