[CES 2021]Micro LED in the home, rollable in hand… Display evolution

As organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) evolve both in terms of quality and quantity, next-generation display technologies such as micro LEDs are also evolving one step further. The liquid crystal display (LCD) technology also develops the technology used for backlight and presents new possibilities.

Micro LED technology led by Samsung Electronics is expected to be a new electricity for home products. Samsung Electronics introduces 110-inch micro LED at CES, and plans to introduce 99-inch products around March and April. Micro LED is a product in which ultra-small LEDs in micrometer (㎛) units emit light and color, and you can experience the natural image quality like seeing real objects. Although it has excellent technology, the price that exceeds 100 million won is an obstacle to popularization. However, as the price is lowered in proportion to the evolution of production technology, the technological evolution shown at CES every year shows that popularization is approaching.

It is also worth noting the changes that the display form factor innovation will show. Foldables and rollables have already been commercialized and continue to evolve. It is noteworthy when expected future technologies such as stretchable will be implemented.

LG Electronics introduced a rollable all-red TV in 2019, followed by a rollable smartphone this year. At the CES 2021 press conference, LG Electronics unveiled a teasing video of the next-generation strategic smartphone’LG Rollable’. After showing only a faint outline at the’LG Wing’ public event in September last year, it was the first to show the front of the product and the operation.

In the video, the LG Rollable looks like a regular bar-type smartphone at first, but gradually the rollable display expands and changes into a shape like a large screen tablet PC. At the end of the video, the expanded screen was rolled back, and the product name’LG Rollable’ was also officially formulated. Finally, the sentence’More to Explore’ implied that LG Rollable was the result of LG Electronics’ innovation strategy’Explorer Project’.

The LG Rollable can be used with a 6.8-inch 1080×2428 aspect ratio before the screen is unfolded, and a 7.4-inch 1600×2428 aspect ratio when fully extended. As early as March, the product will be officially announced and launched globally.
