[서울=뉴스핌] Reporter Shim Ji-hye = Chinese home appliance maker TCL unveiled a’rollable phone’ with the screen rolling around at CES2021, the world’s largest home appliance IT expo. As LG Electronics announced its launch one step ahead, TCL announced it one after another, and the rollable phone is emerging as the biggest concern in the premium smartphone market this year.

On the 11th (based on US time), TCL introduced a rollable smartphone through the CES2021 press conference video. The product released on this day is a concept product, and the presenter introduced it as a pre-recorded video rather than the real one.

In the video, the rollable phone appears in a small size, but the screen gradually stretches upwards. When the screen is enlarged the most, it looks the same as a general smartphone.

TCL did not disclose specific specifications, but explained that it can use an active organic light-emitting diode (AMLOED) as a display and increase the screen from 6.7 inches to 7.8 inches. The thickness is less than 10mm, and the screen can be extended by simply tapping with a finger. This can be done not up to 100,000 times.

This product also features a flexible display. As the screen comes out, it can be not only spread flat, but also bent.

Along with this, TCL introduced the 17-inch’Printed AMOLED Scrolling Display’. While the 6.7-inch rollable display introduced earlier was basically used vertically, the scrolling display looks like a scroll that rolls the screen on both sides around two axes.

TCL emphasized that this display is only 0.18mm thick and is highly portable because it can scroll large screens.

TCL said, “We utilized TCL CSOT’s state-of-the-art inkjet printing technology with 100% color gamut. It can be widely applied to flexible TVs, rollable and foldable displays, and transparent commercial displays.”

LG Electronics also unveiled a rollable phone on that day. However, as with TCL, it was only shown as a concept screen, not real.

In the press event video held online that day, LG Electronics introduced a rollable phone through a scene where a user seems to run the event with a rollable phone.

The first appearance was a general smartphone lying horizontally, but suddenly the screen enlarged upwards and enlarged like a tablet.

LG Electronics did not disclose specific specifications for this product, but simply revealed the name’LG Rollable’.

On the same day, both LG Electronics and TCL unveiled a rollable phone, but the actual commercialization is expected to take place first through LG Electronics. Earlier, Chinese smartphone maker Oppo unveiled a prototype of a rollable phone for the first time in November of last year, but there is still no news of the release.

LG Electronics’ rollable phone release is expected to take place within the first half of this year.
