Controversy in the medical community is accelerating as the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety has given AstraZeneca vaccine vaccination for the elderly over the age of 65 and placed conditions that require careful decisions under the judgment of doctors. Some people are suspicious of ‘because of the lack of effect data over 65 years of age, vaccination is difficult’ or that the government is transferring responsibility for vaccination to the doctor.
Among them, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended vaccination of the AstraZeneca vaccine for the elderly, aiding the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety’s judgment. In the future, attention is focused on the trend of the medical industry.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety is a regulatory agency that decides whether to permit or not, and the actual vaccination plan is decided by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. On the 11th at 4:00 pm, the Korea National Disease Service Vaccination Committee will deliberate on this, and the Agency will announce the results early next week.
According to a post by doctors posted on the online doctors’ community site’Doctor Plaza’, on the 11th, one doctor said, “The flu vaccine has already been validated and has sufficient clinical experience, but the Corona 19 vaccine is an injection that has never been used. “They pointed out, “The AstraZeneca vaccine has not been verified.” He then raised his voice, “What do you believe in a drug you see for the first time and indiscriminately inoculate the public?”
Another doctor posted a post saying, “It’s annoying to see the government pass the judgment on vaccination to the hospital,” and “Hospitals will suffer from patient inquiries and protests.”
Earlier, the Korean Medical Association said that AstraZeneca vaccine cannot be vaccinated over the age of 65.
On the 1st, the president of the Medical Association of Max Zip said through his SNS (social network service) Facebook, “The US is still undergoing the AstraZeneca vaccine approval process, and the European Medicines Agency has not sufficiently proven its efficacy in the elderly over 55 years of age, “We recommended vaccination to people,” he stressed, “in Germany and France, which are major European member states, recommend refraining from vaccination over the age of 65.”
Chairman Choi said, “The Korea Medical Association is conducting a review on the efficacy and safety of this vaccine. Even if the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety determines the availability of vaccination for the elderly, the Medical Association will recommend refraining from vaccination.”
The WHO, on the other hand, said the AstraZeneca vaccine could be used in elderly people over the age of 65. In fact, it was recommended to health authorities around the world.
In a statement on the 10th (local time), the WHO panel of experts determined that “the potential benefit of vaccination is greater than the known potential risk” regarding vaccination for the elderly 65 years of age or older.
The WHO pointed out that the number of elderly people 65 years or older who participated in the clinical trial was small, as determined by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
However, WHO emphasized, “According to studies in countries that received this vaccine, immune responses were well induced in the elderly who received the vaccine,” he said. “This means that the vaccine is effective and safe for the elderly.”
In fact, plans on how to inoculate those over 65 in Korea will be announced early next week. Based on the deliberation result of the Vaccination Specialist Committee, the Agency for Disease Control and Prevention will announce whether or not to administer the AstraZeneca vaccine at the beginning of next week, the timing of administration, and the targets for the first inoculation of the Corona 19 vaccine in Korea.
