Car-Semiconductor Council launched under the leadership of the Ministry of Industry…

It doesn’t work well in the past

A consultative body is established under the leadership of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy to seek cooperation between domestic automobile-semiconductor companies. It seems that the intention is to solve the shortage of vehicle semiconductor supply, which has continued since the beginning of this year, from a long-term perspective. However, there have been such attempts in the past, but there was no result.

The Ministry of Industry announced on the 3rd that it held the launching ceremony of the’Future Vehicle-Semiconductor Solidarity Cooperation Council’ and discussed plans for cooperation between domestic automobile-semiconductor companies. Key figures from demanding companies (Hyundai Motor Company, Hyundai Mobis), supplier companies (Samsung Electronics, DB Hitech, Telechips, Nextchip), and support organizations (Semiconductor Association, Automobile Association, Korea Automobile Research Institute, Korea Institute of Electronics Technology) attended the event. did.

Kang Kyung-sung, head of the industrial policy department of the Ministry of Industry, who presided over the meeting, premised, “This global automotive semiconductor supply and demand uncertainty is caused by the global semiconductor supply and demand mismatch, and it is difficult to fundamentally resolve it in a short period of time.” The Ministry of Industry wrote in the press release released that day, “Currently, microcontroller units (MCUs) for vehicles that are difficult to procure are not produced at domestic semiconductor factories.” Neither Samsung Electronics nor DB HiTek have a vehicle MCU process. It was pointed out that the inauguration ceremony on this day could not be achieved in a short period of time.

However, Kang said, “We will use this crisis as an opportunity to increase future car-semiconductor competitiveness.” The Ministry of Industry said that it plans to support the discovery of a cooperative model between automobile and semiconductor companies. He explained that he plans to make a detailed plan by reviewing industry opinions released on the day, and to announce it soon after consultation with related ministries.

The Ministry of Industry also said, “We are closely discussing with the international community to improve the semiconductor supply and demand situation at the request of the domestic automobile industry,” as a short-term measure. The US and Europe are making requests to increase production of secondary semiconductors to overseas foundries such as Taiwan’s TSMC. It is not confirmed whether the’close discussion’ expressed by the Ministry of Industry has requested Taiwan to increase production.

In July 2009, Hyundai Motor Company and Samsung Electronics announced that they would jointly develop automotive semiconductors under the presidency of the Ministry of Industry. However, nothing came out. At that time, the vice chairman of Hyundai Motors and the president of Samsung Electronics were presented. The Minister of Industry presided over the event. When looking at the side of the people at this year’s event, it was evaluated that it was composed of people who had less power to make decisions compared to the time.

An official in the domestic semiconductor industry said, “Compared to general consumer semiconductors, car semiconductors have a smaller market and higher technological entry barriers.” Revealed.
