Canada approves use of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine

(Vancouver = Yonhap News) Correspondent Cho Jae-yong = The Ministry of Health of Canada has approved the use of AstraZeneca’s novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) vaccine on the 26th (local time), a local media reported.

The Ministry of Health said in the decision to approve the AstraZeneca vaccine, “Overall, there are no major safety issues and can be easily accommodated by inoculations.”

As a result, there are three types of Corona 19 vaccines available in Canada along with Pfizer and Modena vaccines that are currently being vaccinated.

The Ministry of Health explained that the AstraZeneca vaccine is less effective than the Pfizer or Moder vaccine, but it is 100% effective in preventing the corona 19 from worsening into serious symptoms.

AstraZeneca vaccine secured by Canada through a pre-purchase agreement is expected to be delivered in a total of 22 million doses, most of which will be delivered in April-September, according to local media.

Procurement Minister Anita Annand said they are negotiating to speed up the supply schedule.

Health authorities have also approved the use of’Coby Shield’, a Serum Institute (SII) product in India that is commissioned to produce AstraZeneca Corona 19 vaccine.

The supply of Kobi Shield is 2 million in total, and 500,000 in the next week will be brought in first.

Accordingly, officials reported that the volume of Corona 19 vaccines to be supplied to Canada by the end of next month will increase to 6.5 million doses.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, “More and more people will be able to get the vaccine faster,” he said. “In spring, the vaccine will be delivered at an even faster rate.”

As of this day, a total of 1,762,871 doses of the vaccine against Corona 19 in Canada are in progress, which is 4.6 doses per 100 people.

On this day, the number of Corona 19 patients in Canada was counted to 861,472, an increase of 3,252 from the previous day, local media reported.

The cumulative death toll was 21,915, an increase of 50.
