The controversy is that candidate Byeon Chang-heum, the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, made a gender discrimination statement in the process of clarifying the past false statements.
In the afternoon of the 23rd, Candidate Byeon explained a remark at the National Assembly’s National Land Transportation Committee’s personnel hearing, when he was the president of the Seoul Housing and Urban Corporation (SH) in 2016, saying,’Would people who can’t live eat their meals at home? I’m very cautious about having breakfast like this because of makeup or something like that.”
Candidate Byun said in a story about a shared restaurant in a shared house when he was the president of SH. “If you reduce the kitchen on the premise of that (shared restaurant), will it fit the real culture?” I said.
Candidate Byeon explained, “It was meant to create a program where residents would select people who could share breakfast, but it is too unfair to leap forward and ask that poor people not to eat out.”

Regarding Candidate Byun’s remarks on’make-up’, Chairman Jin Sun-mi, head of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, “There is a concern that it will promote prejudice against women. Please make a pledge to try to give you a chance.”
Then Candidate Byeon responded, saying, “This is the purpose of judging the demand for use,” and “I am sorry to tell you that it was not the purpose, which could have caused another misunderstanding.”
In this regard, Democratic Party lawmaker Jo Oh-seop said, “It was a story that came out of a contemplation of how to make space efficient like a real estate expert, and it was said as a part to resolve that (controversial remarks), but there may be some inappropriate expressions.” .
