Busan City ˝Hanjin Heavy Industries’ Yeongdo Shipyard’s usage change is not permitted˝

-Acting Byeon, expressing regret to 産銀
-“Shipyard land, pursuit of development interest
-Stop the total mobilization of administrative power”
-Notice of strong response to Busan Sang-do

The local community is fiercely protesting that the Dongbu Construction Consortium was selected as the preferred negotiator for the sale of Hanjin Heavy Industries (reported on pages 1 and 4 of the 23rd International Newspaper). Busan City responded intensively, saying that if the site of Hanjin Heavy Industries’ Yeongdo Shipyard was difficult to develop, it would not allow the change of use.

Mayor Byeon Seong-wan held a briefing at Busan City Hall on the 23rd and said, “The Dongbu Construction Consortium, which was selected as a priority negotiator for Hanjin Heavy Industries, prioritizes the property value of the Yeongdo Shipyard site. We will thoroughly cut off the link that can lead to it.” He added, “The current industrial area of Yeongdo Shipyard cannot be changed to a residential or commercial site, and even if the Dongbu Construction Consortium is a problem, the city has the authority to respond,” he added.

“Although the local community has been striving to normalize Hanjin Heavy Industries, we express our deep regret that the Korea Development Bank (Saneun) selected Dongbu Construction Consortium according to the economic logic.” “The sale of Hanjin Heavy Industries is in the direction of helping the Busan economy. It must be promoted, and the sale procedure must be conducted transparently and fairly by securing sufficient consensus with the region on the premise of maintaining the shipbuilding industry and employment.”

Earlier, Hanjin Heavy Industries’ shareholders’ council such as KDB selected Dongbu Construction Consortium as the preferred target for negotiation and SM Merchant Marine Consortium as the target for preliminary negotiations. Accordingly, Dongbu Construction Consortium plans to sign a contract to buy and sell all stocks owned by creditors in the first half of next year through due diligence work at Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction. Although the Dongbu Construction Consortium announced that it would maintain the shipbuilding industry for at least three years, it is pointed out that if those with no experience in the shipbuilding business become the new owners of Hanjin Heavy Industries, there is a high possibility of restructuring the shipyard and related personnel.

The Busan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and civic groups also raised their voices and announced a strong response. Vice Chairman Lee Gap-joon of Busan, who visited Saneun on the 22nd and delivered the position of the local community, said, “I am very sorry that the Sang-eun made a sudden decision in a situation where the local economy is not good.” “If you cannot keep the shipbuilding industry and employment during the sale negotiation I will protest with all my efforts.” Park In-ho, executive chairman of the Citizens’ Solidarity for Reviving the Busan Economy, said, “It is wrong that Saneun decided to unilaterally ignore local opinions and reflect only the opinions of creditors.” I will present it.”
