Bundang Seoul National University Hospital “Vitamin D is the most deficient nutrient for obesity patients

Studies have shown that most of the patients undergoing obesity metabolic surgery are deficient in essential nutrients such as vitamin D.

Obesity metabolic surgery is to reduce the amount of meals by removing part of the stomach and limit the absorption of nutrients such as sugars into the body.

The research team of Professor Park Young-seok of Surgery at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital announced on the 6th that they confirmed this by analyzing 215 people who underwent obesity metabolic surgery at the hospital in 2019 to investigate the status of nutrient deficiency.

As a result of the study, the most common nutrient deficiency before obesity metabolic surgery was vitamin D. 80% of all patients were’deficient’ and 14% were’insufficient’.

Vitamin D is associated with calcium metabolism and bone mineral density, so if the body weight and muscle mass are decreased after surgery and at the same time, the risk of bone fracture due to vitamin D deficiency is lowered.

After vitamin D, vitamin B1 (18.3%), folic acid (14.2%), iron (11.8%), and zinc (7.6%) had the highest deficiency rate in that order.

All four are essential nutrients, so if they are deficient, symptoms such as beriberi disease, anemia, and reduced immunity can occur, so they must be managed continuously.

The research team hoped that these results would serve as an important basis for establishing standard nutritional management guidelines for patients before and after obesity metabolic surgery.

Professor Park said, “There is a perception that obese patients are overnutrition, but there are many deficient nutrients because they have little physical activity and their eating habits are tilted to one side.” Afterwards, you will be able to achieve your goal of losing weight and reducing blood sugar in a healthy way.”

The results of the study were published in’Obesity Surgery’, an international academic journal of the World Federation of Obesity Metabolism and Surgery.
