Pat Galsinger, Intel’s next CEO, said in a conference call (telephone briefing) for the 4th quarter of 2020, which was held for about an hour from 7 am on the 22nd, “There is a possibility to use an external foundry company for the production of’specific chips High,” he said.
At the conference call, CEO Galsinger said, “I directly checked the status of Intel’s 7nm technology development, and (the technology) continues to improve.” “The flagship product (CPU) manufactured by Intel’s 7nm process will be sold from 2023.” Said. As an’Integrated Semiconductor Company (IDM)’ that performs product design, production, and sales, it shows confidence in semiconductor production technology.
Regarding the possibility of using external foundry (consigned semiconductor production) companies such as TSMC and Samsung Electronics’ foundry division, he said, “It is highly likely to entrust the outsourcing production to Foundry.” Galsinger said, “Because Intel’s product portfolio is broad, it is highly likely to expand the use of external foundries for’specific technologies and products’. We will produce most of our products in-house, but we will use more external equipment than we currently have.” Explained. Regarding the specific roadmap, he added, “There will be an opportunity to reveal detailed plans after more careful examination.”
No specific foundry was mentioned. In the market, it was observed that on this day, Intel will disclose the names of foundry companies such as TSMC and Samsung Electronics and items that are entrusted to outsourcing production.
According to the semiconductor industry, Intel entrusted the consignment production of’South Bridge’, a motherboard chipset, to the TSMC 4nm process in Taiwan and the GPU (graphics processing unit) for the 14nm process at the Austin Foundry Plant in the US. Mass production is expected to begin in earnest from the second half of this year. In 2023, it is expected that TSMC and Samsung Electronics will compete with Intel for some CPU outsourcing production.
