US Secretary of State Tony Blincoln announced on the 24th (local time) that he would not force allies to make an alternative between the United States and China.

According to Reuters, Minister Blincoln said this while meeting with the foreign ministers of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

“China is a threat to the West,” Blincoln said, but “the United States will not force its allies to choose between China and the United States.”

He also cited climate change as an example, saying, “Each country can cooperate with China in areas where possible.”

This is a remark that came out of the US allies, such as France and Germany, seeking a strategic balance between the US and China without clearly taking any side of anybody.

After taking office on his first European tour since his inauguration, Minister Blincoln is scheduled to meet with NATO Foreign Ministers on the same day and meet with EU Executive Committee Chairman Ursula von der Raien and EU Foreign Affairs and Security Representative Josef Borrell.

Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stressed on the same day that “China is a country that does not share values with us,” and that NATO is an alliance of democratic states that support freedom of speech and assembly.
