Billionaires getting richer by Corona World No. 1 Bezos, Korea No. 1 Kim Jeong-joo

According to a survey, the world’s billionaire wealth has increased by over 50% on average over the past year, driven by the Corona 19 pandemic.

According to the data released by the US think tank Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) on the 31st of last month (local time), the total wealth of 2,365 rich people around the world was 12.39 trillion dollars (about 9060 trillion won) in the past year. It surged 54% in dollars (3970 trillion won per car). Their total assets increased by $4.55 trillion (about 4900 trillion won).

Based on statistics from Forbes and Bloomberg, the IPS prepared this report by comparing the wealth changes of wealthy people with net assets of more than $1 billion (about 1,1272 trillion won) from March 18 last year to March 18 this year.

No. 1 fortune was Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s CEO, to $178.1 billion, a 58% increase over the past year. France’s Louis Vuitton Moe Hennessy (LVMH) group chairman Bernard Arno’s family rose 114% to $166.2 billion, taking second place.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk was third with $162.1 billion. Musk’s fortune has multiplied more than six times within a year as Tesla’s stock price soared during the pandemic. Next, Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft ($126.5 billion, an increase of 29%), Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg ($101.7 billion, an increase of 86%), and Chairman Warren Buffett Berkshire Hathaway ($96.50 billion, an increase of 43%) were followed.

Of the 38 billionaire Koreans surveyed, NXC CEO Kim Jeong-joo ($14.1 billion) ranked 144th, the highest ranking. Celltrion Chairman Seo Jeong-jin ($13.8 billion), Kakao Chairman Kim Beom-soo ($9.7 billion), and Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong ($84 billion) were on the list. It is estimated that the inheritance of the late Samsung Electronics chairman Lee Kun-hee was not reflected in Vice Chairman Lee.

In the past year, 13 new billionaires have been named ‘500% Club’, with their fortunes increasing by more than 500%. This included Musk and the Chairman of the Board of Directors Kim Bum-Seok (an increase of 670%), who recently listed Coupang on the New York Stock Exchange. It is the only Korean. The billionaire with the most wealth was the chairman of Zhongshan Shan, the founder of Nungfu Shanquan, a bottled water company in China, with an increase of 3300%.
