The’No. 1 Policy’ that US President Joe Biden will send to Congress right after the oath of office on the 20th (local time) is the immigration law. The goal is to give illegal immigrants living in the United States legal status of residence and eventually absorb them as U.S. citizens. In short, the idea is to overturn the Donald Trump administration’s anti-immigration policy. As the ripple power is great, the Republican Party opposes it with a double head. From the first step of the Biden administration, it is a thorny road.

The currents among Republicans and conservatives against the new immigration law are criticized. There is even a fierce reaction of “’group amnesty’ for illegal immigrants.” Republican Congressman Chuck Grasley, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, criticized on the 19th that “a large pardon without safety devices and no conditions is not worth reconsidering. Senator Marco Rubio of the same party cut and said, “There are many agendas that can cooperate with President Biden, but it is not a pardon for illegal immigrants.” Mark Cricorian, director of the Conservative Think Tank Immigration Research Center (CIS), said, “While past immigration laws were at least turning off the faucet and wiping off excess water, the Biden administration’s immigration law was to wipe the floor with a mop while leaving the faucet open. ”He criticized.

The new immigration law stipulates the procedure for obtaining citizenship for undocumented immigrants. If illegal immigrants pass a background check and meet their basic obligations, such as paying taxes, they will receive temporary ID cards or permanent residency for five years. Three years later, they go through the naturalization process and become an official U.S. citizen. The procedure was also simplified for youths in illegal immigration called Dreamers so that they can apply for permanent residence immediately when their enrollment is proved. Apart from immigration law, President Biden is scheduled to begin the procedure for reunion of separated families at the border between the United States and Mexico within ten days of taking office, and issue an executive order to stop building the barrier.

Of course, there is also evidence of concern for the backlash public opinion. As of January 1 of this year, the bill only targets illegal immigrants residing in the United States. This is to prevent the indiscriminate influx of “caravans” of Latin American immigrants to the United States in anticipation of the inauguration of the Biden administration.

Still, passing the bill is far from being done. The Associated Press said, “It will be difficult to cooperate due to the lack of measures to strengthen border security required by the Republican Party.” CNN broadcast also predicted that it would not be easy to cross the wall of Congress, saying, “There were many cases where the passage of the immigration law was frustrated before, but there were more anti-immigrants in the Republican Party during Trump’s period.”

If there is a creak from the first policy, the Biden administration’s “delete Trump” task will inevitably be delayed. President Biden signs 12 executive orders only on the day of inauguration, starting with filing the immigration law. Housing stability for low-income families who could not pay for housing due to a novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19), abolition of the ban on entry to the U.S. for citizens of Islamic countries, rejoining the Paris Climate Change Convention, and mandatory wearing of masks in public institutions. At the same time, there is no content for the Republican Party to pass by.
