US President Joe Biden told Congress on the 27th (local time) that it was “in line with the US’s right to self-defense” in relation to the Syrian air strike.

According to US media CNBC, in a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, President Biden said, “The United States has taken this action in accordance with its own right of self-defense, as reflected in Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations.”

President Biden ordered an air strike on a facility in eastern Syria used by militia supported by Iran on the 25th. The Ministry of Defense said that several facilities at control points in the border area were destroyed and casualties occurred. However, no additional information was provided.

The air raid is a response to a rocket attack on the Erbil International Airport in northern Iraq, where coalition forces are stationed, on the 15th. The attack killed one foreigner and injured many American civilians and troops.

President Biden said, “We have ordered these military actions to protect our Americans and our partners from the last and possible attacks of the Syrian militia.”

The letter came as some Democratic senators opposed President Biden for taking military action without parliamentary approval and demanded a briefing.

According to the War Powers Resolution, the President must notify Congress within 48 hours of taking military action.

In his letter, President Biden referred to his constitutional rights as commander-in-chief, saying, “I am in line with my responsibility to protect U.S. citizens and promote U.S. national security and foreign policy interests in the United States and abroad under the constitutional authority to conduct U.S. diplomatic relations I ordered this military action,” he explained.

According to a spokesman for the National Security Council (NSC), the Pentagon briefed congressional leaders prior to the attack. Democratic aide also said that House Speaker Pelosi was also briefed before the air raid.

Iran condemned the US air raid on the 27th. He also denied rocket attacks targeting the United States.

Iranian state media said Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif had “illegal and undermined Syria’s sovereignty” in the US air raid.

CNN received a satellite image released by space technology company Maxar Technologies that day, and compared the US before and after the Syrian air strike.

From this, it can be seen that a dozen or so buildings in an area just over a third of the Iraqi border were destroyed after the air raid.
