U.S. President Joe Biden announced on the 1st that he will sign an executive order sanctioning the Myanmar military forces that caused the coup and take additional measures, including strong export controls.

According to Reuters and AFP, President Biden held a press conference at the White House on the 10th (local time) and said, “We will impose new sanctions on Myanmar military leaders and related people who caused the coup.”

President Biden said, “The Myanmar coup remains a subject of deep concern,” and stressed that “the Myanmar military must give up its power.”

“We have approved a new executive order that will immediately sanction the heads of the military who led the coup, their business interests, and close family members.” However, it did not specifically specify the subject of sanctions.

President Biden said, “The US government is taking steps to prevent the military from accessing $1 billion in funds in Myanmar,” he said. “After identifying the targets of the first sanctions within this state, we are ready to take strong export controls and take additional measures. It is done,” he said.

Finally, President Biden said, “The world is watching (Myanmar),” and urged the military to release democratic leaders.

At a press conference that day, President Biden used the old national name of’Burma’ instead of Myanmar. The U.S. government is using Burma instead of Myanmar, which was given by the military regime in 1989 in a sense of criticizing the Myanmar military.

Earlier on the 1st, Myanmar’s military department said that “severe misconduct occurred, but the government failed to properly investigate it” when the Democratic Peoples Alliance (NLD) led by State Advisor Aung San Suu Kyi won overwhelming victory in the general election last November. He took over by a coup.
