U.S. President Joe Biden officially announced a policy of sanctions against the Myanmar military forces that carried out a coup on the 10th (local time).
President Biden said in his midday speech that he approved a new executive order that would promptly sanction military leaders who ordered a coup in Myanmar, and cited businesses related to military leaders as well as close family members. “We will finalize the first (sanctions) target this week and impose strong export controls,” he added.
President Biden said, “We will take steps to prevent the military from improperly accessing the $1 billion of Burmese (Myanmar) government funds in the United States.” We will maintain support in areas such as medical care.”
It also criticized the violent suppression of protests against the coup and added that additional measures could be mobilized.
The military has repeatedly demanded the renunciation of power and the immediate release of state adviser Aung San Suu Kyi.
State Department spokesman Ned Price said at a briefing today that those responsible for the Myanmar coup will pay a significant price.
The first list of sanctions that the Biden administration will soon bring will include Supreme Commander Min Aung Hlaing who led the coup. Reuters predicted that large corporations such as MEHL, which are affiliated with the military, could also be included. Generals, including Supreme Commander Hlaing, have already been subject to US sanctions in 2019 following the massacre of a small number of Muslim Rohingya in Myanmar.

The Associated Press pointed out that it remains to be seen how the Biden administration’s actions will affect the military in Myanmar.
The speech that day was not included in President Biden’s schedule, but was released about an hour before the speech. The speech was not as long as four minutes. It seems that the schedule was set urgently prior to the planned visit to the Ministry of Defense.
President Biden condemned the coup in Myanmar on the 1st in US time as a direct attack on democracy and the rule of law and warned of sanctions. The United States lifted most of the sanctions until September 2016 when the Myanmar military domination was overwhelmed by the overwhelming victory of the Democratic National Alliance in 2015 led by advisor Suu Kyi.
The Myanmar military officially confirmed the coup on the 1st in Korean time and declared a one-year emergency. Adviser Suu Kyi and President Yun Min have been detained at home.
