“A long time ago, while walking around the house with Minhee Kim, I found a young snail. I want to show this snail as a small gift to all of you who are going through tough times.”
Director Hong Sang-soo, who won the third prize at the Berlin Film Festival, had a different impression of the award. While all of the winners who could not visit the awards ceremony directly due to Corona 19 shared their impressions through video, director Hong released text and a snail video instead of showing joyful faces like other winners.

In this year’s film festival, he said, “I greet you in Korea with text and voice instead of face for becoming the owner of the Silver Bear Award (screenwriter) with’Introduction’. I was surprised and happy to hear the news of the award.” After reading all the impressions of the award, a slow moving snail video was released using Doris Day’s “Ke Serasera,” sung by Kim Min-hee, as the background music.

In the film industry, Hong is considered one of the’loved’ directors at the Berlin Film Festival. Director Hong has been working on’Night and Day’ (2008),’Nobody’s Daughter Hae Won’ (2013),’Alone on the Beach at Night’ (2017),’Runaway Woman’ (2020), Introduction (2021). I have been invited to the competition section five times. Among them,’Alone on the Beach at Night’ won the Silver Bear Award for Best Actress and the’Runaway Woman’ won the Silver Bear Award for Director, and this year’Introduction’ was named in the Silver Bear Screenplay category. It was the final choice at the Berlin Film Festival three times.

‘Introduction’, which is scheduled to be released in Korea in the first half of this year, is a work in which a young man meets his father, lover, and mother in three paragraphs. Shin Seok-ho, Kim Young-ho, Kim Min-hee, Park Miso, and Seok-hwa appeared. Immediately after the work was released, the film industry received favorable reviews, and the judges of the Berlin Film Festival said, “More than telling a story or efficiently unraveling a narration, we create a momentary gap between action and action. The truth hidden inside suddenly emerges brightly and clearly.”
Meanwhile, the Golden Bear, the best prize, went to Romanian director Radu Jude’s Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn. The judges were awarded the’Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy’ by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, and the’Natural Light’ by the Hungarian director Dennes Nazi received the director’s award.
