13 billion won support for 4 years from this year… Development of safety evaluation technology and mobile application products

[에너지데일리 변국영 기자] The development of technology and application products for battery recycling is in full swing.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy is promoting the development of technologies and applied products for high value-added recycling of spent batteries that are expected to increase in the future.
The Ministry of Industry is planning to provide a total of 13 billion won in national expenditure for four years from this year to develop performance and safety evaluation technology and mobile application products, and develop and demonstrate MWh-class ESS technology. Performance/safety evaluation technology, development of BMS exclusively for batteries after use, and standardization to secure safety and reliability are carried out. Regarding the development of mobile application products, there are golf carts, electric wheelchairs, electric forklifts, electric motorcycles, and electric bicycles. When connecting the MWh-class ESS technology development and verification, and considering the deviation between related batteries after use, safety security technology, system optimization technology, and verification are in progress.
Through this project, the Ministry of Industry is planning to establish standards for evaluation and utilization of batteries after use, and support efficient recycling of batteries after use and securing competitiveness of related companies.
It is expected that the battery after being used for a certain period of time in electric vehicles can be applied to other fields such as energy storage systems (ESS) and street lights to increase the utility value. When commercialization is difficult, valuable metals (nickel, cobalt, manganese, etc.) can be recovered and used as resources. However, since it has been used for a long time in various environments, the difference in performance and safety may be large, so it is necessary to prepare an appropriate evaluation plan to secure product reliability.
