Last year, it was found that a large number of retirees were placed in the top five annual salaries of commercial banks instead of bank managers.
According to last year’s business report of four major banks including KB Kookmin, Shinhan, Hana, and Woori on the 21st, the top five annual salaries of Hana Bank were all accounted for by manager-level retirees. They each received an annual salary of 1.2 billion won and received over 200 million won more than Hana Bank President Ji Seong-gyu, who received 1.22 billion won. Of these five, four received more than 1 billion won in severance pay alone.
Woori Bank also has honorary retirees at the top five positions in annual salary, including’salary salary king’. They received 760 million to 870 million won in annual salary last year. Kwon Kwang-seok, head of Woori Bank (53 million won), received 200 million to 300 million won more. Two out of five received severance pay over 800 million won, and three received 700 million won.
Shinhan Bank’s four top five were all retirees except for the head of Jin Ok-dong (1.13 billion won). The severance pay they received was in the mid-700 million to early 800 million-won range. In Kookmin Bank, four out of five were all hopeful retirement employees, except for Chairman Heo In (1.86 billion won). Three out of these four had severance pay around 700 million won.
The average annual salary of bankers is also rising. The average annual salary for employees of the four major banks increased by 7.75 million won (8.6%) from 92.25 million won in 2017 to 98 million won last year. Kookmin Bank increased by 13 million won, the largest increase, followed by Woori Bank (8 million won) and Shinhan Bank and Hana Bank (5 million won). Kookmin Bank (KRW 114 million) received the most average employee salary, followed by Hana Bank (97 million KRW), Shinhan Bank (96 million KRW), and Woori Bank (95 million KRW).
