In the UK, where the world’s first large-scale AstraZeneca vaccine was launched, the vaccine lowered the risk of hospitalization more than Pfizer.

In Scotland, the risk of hospitalization for those who received the AstraZeneca vaccine was reduced by up to 94% and the Pfizer vaccine by 85%. What’s more, this is a result of a single dose, which has fueled their claim that as many people as possible should be vaccinated at least once.

According to The Times of the UK on the 22nd, the University of Edinburgh and the UK public health authorities compared and analyzed the results of large-scale national vaccinations conducted so far.

These results were obtained by analyzing the results of those who received the first vaccination with AstraZeneca and those who did not fit 4 weeks, and those who received Pfizer and those who did not fit between 28 and 34 days after vaccination.

The results are interpreted as that AstraZeneca is more effective in severe cases requiring hospitalization than Pfizer. In addition, both vaccines are the result of one vaccination, which means that the protective effect is very high. Combining the effects of the two vaccines, the risk of hospitalization over the age of 80, who is at high risk of developing severe disease, was also reduced by 81%.

“The results are very encouraging,” said Aziz Sheikh, director of the Usher Institute at the University of Edinburgh, who conducted the study. “We now have national evidence that national vaccinations protect people from COVID-19.”

Researchers looked at data from December 8th to February 15th last year. During this period, 1.14 million people, or 21% of Scotland’s population, were vaccinated. About 650,000 people received the Pfizer vaccine, and 490,000 people received the vaccine developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca.

The New York Times (NYT) said that the study is the result of the first actual vaccination out of clinical trials and “strong evidence that the Corona 19 vaccine is working as intended.” On this day, the British government decided to gradually ease the total blockade from next month based on the results of this study.
